effects
Urban sprawl, along with having many causes, also has many effects. What I mean by effect is, how urban sprawl alters or changes everything around it. Urban sprawl is known to cause...
1.) Wildlife Endangerment
2.)Increased Air Pollution
3.)Water Overconsumption
Wildlife endangerment is a major negative effect from urban sprawl. As suburbs slowly engulf the outskirts of an urban area, the woodland and forrest area suffers. As more and more area is being developed, more and more wildlife is being affected. Think about it, its like somebody wrecking your house and paving over it. Animals live and thrive in the undeveloped areas around cities, and once people start to interfere, everything that lives in that area suffers. Urban sprawl is endangering wildlife all over america and it needs to stop.
The second major negative effect from urban sprawl is increased air pollution. With sprawl comes longer and more frequent car rides into the city. This is a major concern because of the amount of pollution produced by so many people driving so far, so frequently. Because people living in the outer suburbs commute so often into the city, it is causing a huge increase in air pollution in and around the city. Air pollution is a huge problem to begin with, and urban sprawl is just making it worse.
The last effect urban sprawl has on everything around it is water overconsumption. In a very dense urban area, there are not alot of people who have large properties, the houses are very close to eachother leaving no space for a yard, unlike suburban areas. In the suburbs outside of a city, the houses normally have huge yards that need to be cared for. Studies show that nearly 30 percent of all water used in america is for outdoor use and landscaping. In these suburban areas, an insane amount of water is used to landscape and make everytbodies yard look nice. This leads to water distribution problems and water overconsumption.
These effects were the ones that I found most important out of the many I looked into. These three negative externalities were the most savere concequences due to urban sprawl. They just give us three more solid reasons to look into urban sprawl and do something about it.
