solution
Urban sprawl is obviously a huge problem in America right now, and it needs to be fixed before it progresses to such a point of sevarity that it can not be fixed. it became clear to me that urban sprawl is not a problem that can be fixed, it can only be improved. Stopping urban sprawl would mean stopping the development of woodland areas around cities completely, which can not happen because of the increasing population of america. Urban sprawl can only be slowed down, and there are several ways to do this.
The first solution that I thought to be sensible was to simply make people aware of the problem. Send emails, make commercials, put it on billboards, anything to advertize the problem and raise awareness. Hopefully this would make people notice the amount of harm they are causing by developing such large areas of animal habitat. I think once people realize the harm they are doing to these large areas of wildlife, they will take caution when buying houses ouside of cities and expanding the outer suburbs. This will in turn will hopefully slow down the rate of development because more people will buy houses inside the city limits and restrain from new, recently developed areas.
Another way to slow down urban sprawl is to enforce birth control. The root cause of urban sprawl is America's increasingly large population. Because there are so many people living here, as the population rises and people move, new developments must be created to suite their needs. If there wern't so many people buying houses, there wouldn't have to be as many new housing developments made. The only thing to be carefull of when enforcing birth control is making sure that the population doesn't get too low too fast, because if that happens there would be no way to maintain a modern economy with too few people working and there being too many elders to care for. America has to aim for a happy medium. Not too many people, not to few. That way there are enough people working to keep the economy afloat and not so many that it results in rapid urban sprawl. This way urban sprawl would slow down and there wouldn't be so many new developments endangering wildlife.
A third way to slow down urban sprawl is to use new technology to allow more people to be able to work from home. The reason urban sprawl is happening is because people are dependent on accessing workplaces and public services offered only by a large city. There is an incentive to live near the city because of the perks that the city offers its inhabitants. But if we were to somehow take those perks and allow people to access them at home, eliminating the dependency of living in or near the city, people would have the option to spread out and live in small neighborhoods far from the city itself, dramatically slowing down urban sprawl. Using remote access technology, workplaces could incorperate this to allow their employers to get what they need to get done from home, making it unnecissary to live close to work, and getting rid of the incentive to live near the city.
I find all three of these sollutions to be sensible, effective ideas to control urban sprawl. These three solutions, although long term, have the potential to slow down and contribute to the control of the increasingly severe problem. There are also current solutions being put into effect such as energy efficient cars, created to help control the excessive amount of air pollution created by urban sprawl. This problem will continue to pose a threat to wildlife, the environment, and sustainable water sources until something drastic is done to stop it. Fixing this problem will be an exausting challenge, but the sooner something is done, the better.
