What is urban sprawl?
The definition of urban sprawl is, "low density, automobile dependent development beyond the edge of service and employment areas" (www.policyalmanac.org). Put into simple words, urban sprawl is the replacement of woodland or forrest area on the outskirts of an urban area with suburban areas. Urban sprawl is becoming an increasingly important problem in america and around the world. Forrests and woodland areas are essential to not only human life, but all living things on earth and it is being taken away from us. I understand that Urban sprawl itself is inevitable, there is no way around it because americas population is always rising, and seeing as though population density is the main factor causeing rapid urban sprawl across america, that can not really be avoided. But there are ways to decrease the amount of area used, such as decreasing the size or just simply not building so many large suburban areas. Another way to decrease the amount of area used is to raise awareness about the problem, which is what I am doing right now. I will go deeper into solutions on the solutions page, but hopefully now you see that urban sprawl is not something to procrastinate about. It is not stopping for anything and if somebody doesn't do something about it soon, the concequences could be dire.
